Summary

Description

We are asking a group of WOW students to walk in the shoes of local families experiencing food insecurity. One half of the group will take the SNAP challenge: following the budget and purchasing guidelines of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly Food Stamps) for one week; and the other half will receive food from The Hunger Coalition, walking through our lines at the Mobile Food Bank for one week. The students will journal on their experiences, sharing what they encountered through The Hunger Coalition’s Facebook page, website and, for the overachievers, with the rest of their school through an awareness presentation.

A critical piece of this project is understanding hunger in our community, especially in children. The monies donated by the students will be used to purchase critical foods for the Mobile Food Bank. Students will be invited to the warehouse to help stock the shelves with the foods they purchased. After having spent time in the shoes of locals facing food insecurity, the students will have the opportunity to learn about compassion.
