Every Child Ready to Learn project will engage Blaine County students and parents to teach the importance of community and family literacy. The project will focus on shared book reading in both English and Spanish and provide parent training in both English and Spanish to strengthen early literacy and numeracy skills at home. Students (4th grade and up) will engage in the process of shared book reading with Blaine County preschool and kindergarten classes using the book, “Have You Filled a Bucket Today” A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids.

LPLC early literacy trainers will teach shared book reading techniques to kids and reading buddies will be assigned. Every kindergarten and preschool child participating will receive a copy of “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids in their native language to take home. Parents of the preschool and kindergarten students at the schools participating will be invited to parent evening where LPLC trainers will provide training on simple and effective early learning activities that can be done at home to improve literacy and math outcomes. The trainings will be delivered in English and Spanish and all parents will receive a copy of LPLC’s book, Every Child Ready to Learn. During the training, childcare will be provided and dinner will be served. This is an ideal project for dual immersion classes as shared book reading can be done in both English and Spanish. Also, this project works well and is easy to implement in elementary school buildings as no transportation is required. reading between students and parent evenings that will provide training for parents and encourage them to practice the activities outlined in the books at home.

The students will each hand deliver a copy of “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids to each preschool and kindergarten child participating before reading to the child, thereby making the direct connection between generosity reinforcing the act of shared book reading. Further, the teachers of the older students will be notified about the attendance at the parent training.
