Work with Higher Ground Staff to execute and film a Paralympic School Day experience with one fifth grade classroom in the Wood River Valley. The day’s events will include implementing various athletic activities that capture the adapted Paralympic sporting events, including sitting volleyball and amputee soccer. Goals for this project include increasing students’ knowledge and awareness of Paralympic sports, creating a better understanding of inclusion in physical education and activity in school, facilitating a change in perspective and attitude toward individuals with disabilities, and developing ideas with students about increasing opportunities for all people with disabilities.
The HG Paralympic School Day program will help accomplish the objectives of maximizing awareness and understanding toward people with physical or cognitive disabilities. To achieve these goals the Higher Ground staff, along with the WOW class, will aim to increase students’ knowledge and awareness of Paralympic sports, create a better understanding of inclusion in physical education and activity in school, facilitate a change in perspective and attitude toward individuals with disabilities, and develop ideas with students about increasing opportunities for all people with disabilities.
Each Paralympic School Day Experience is based on a 5 hour schedule; morning activities include a Paralympian’s personal story, followed by three physical activities including sitting volleyball, amputee football, and an adaptive equipment obstacle course. After lunch students use blindfolds and goggles to simulate visual impairments, and for the final activity of the day all students collaboratively create a group art project to reflect on their feelings and experiences throughout the day’s activities.
We hope the WOW class can help our Higher Ground staff plan and execute the day’s activities with one fifth grade classroom; in addition, the class will film and edit a 2-3 minute video to capture the day’s events.
